What Would Jesus Have Done?

Several weeks ago, in the early morning hours, an unusual incident happened on our country road. This incidence involved a wreck, young adults in the wreck, a stolen car, drugs &/or alcohol, several of the neighbors, police, searches, the K-9 officer, etc. I still think about it often, maybe because the skid marks are still on the road west of my house and the tracks are visible in the ditch.

My “involvement” began when a county deputy banged on my door a little before 2 a.m. Larry was travelling for work and both of my sons were home for Thanksgiving break. For whatever reason, I was not panicked by a deputy banging on my door. I guess it is good that I do not automatically assume the worst? The deputy was looking “for kids.” As I told him I had kids, I looked to make sure their cars were parked at home, thinking, “They better be here, if they know what’s good for them!” He then told me these would be “bloody kids” that had ran from a wreck and he needed to search my out-buildings.

There was a broken window on the shed I needed to check out. It had previously been broken, but I trekked out there with him, just to be sure we were talking about the same window and that no other damage had occurred. I was thankful my outfit of purple, polka dot pjs; black, checkered flannel shirt; and pink, fluffy house slippers were not a prosecutable crime (only a fashion crime). As I was telling the deputy which buildings had animals in them, Happy, the donkey, let out a loud bray from the darkness of the east barn. As always, it made me smile, and I wondered what the deputy was thinking at this point. I also thought that sound would make anyone hiding in the vicinity of that barn come out with their hands up, begging for police protection!

Later, after the chaos passed, I wondered what I would have done had the young adults showed up on my doorstep? Bloodied, intoxicated, young adults. I just wasn’t sure.

Then, the next day, I got a better idea of what I would have done. An SUV stopped at the end of my driveway and a young man got out and started looking around the edge of our yard. I suspected someone from the wreck. I went out on the front porch and asked if I could help him. He identified himself as one of the people in the wreck. He and his girlfriend were looking for his lost wallet. I explained that I didn’t think they made it as far east as my house and we chatted for a bit about the logistics of the wreck. I didn’t see a criminal. I saw a young “kid” in the age range of my boys. Which, I decided, is most likely what I would have seen at 2 a.m. had they shown up at my house. I still am not sure what I would have done, though. I do know that I couldn’t have said, “No room in the inn.” and gone back to my warm, comfy bed.

I wonder what would Jesus have done? I picture Him pausing to think, maybe drawing in the dirt and having the perfect parable for them.

John 8: 6-7 New International Version (NIV)
They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”

Does this type of situation include Hebrews 13:1-2 (NIV)?
1Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

I’m still not sure what I would have done in the wee hours of the morning had the young people shown up at my door or what I should have done the next day when they did show up at my door. Somehow, I feel I probably did not do enough that day I was chatting with the young man in my yard. I do hope they drove away feeling fortunate the situation didn’t end worse as we did talk about their injuries and that it was good that no one was hurt more seriously.

What would you do in a similar situation? What would Jesus do? How closely aligned are the two responses?
