The Broken Knob

There is a story about this knob, in my kitchen, that is begging to be written. I don’t even know what it is; the moral of the story. Something, Someone, is telling me to sit down at my computer and start writing. I am trusting that feeling, that Someone, to write this story.

We have a bread drawer in our kitchen. The knob to open that cabinet drawer pulls off when someone pulls on it, oh, 97 out of 100 times. Everyone finds it frustrating. Everyone except me. I used to get frustrated by it, too. I feel their pain.

Now, I find it amusing. “What? Why?” you ask. It tickles me to see the look of surprise, then frustration, on the faces of the men in my life as they go for a bun, bagel or loaf of bread. (I know, I have a warped sense of humor.) 97 out of 100 times, give or take, the knob will come off in their hand, they may or may not drop it, yet they still are surprised. Which makes me giggle.

These men in my life, ages 48, 23 and 19, will then look at me and say, “When are you going to fix this?” I repeat, 48, 23 and 19 …. Old enough to fix it themselves, if it really bother them, don’t ya think?

I say, “I am never going to fix it. Even if I replace all the knobs on the kitchen cabinets, I think I will leave that one.” That gets me all kinds of nasty looks.

Besides the laugh, another benefit is that I consider it part of my workout when I have to bend over and chase the rolling knob across the floor. It’s good for my flexibility. Whew! It is nice to get a workout in so early in the morning.

How many times do you suppose God leaves an inconvenience in our path because we are too stubborn or too busy to fix it ourselves? How many times do we repeat the same action, the same behavior, only to become frustrated with the same result? 97 out of 100? I know I should pray more. I know I should trust Him more. I know I should study the Bible more. I know I shouldn’t get frustrated over inconveniences. I know …. the list is endless!

I believe the moral of the story is: Don’t expect different results from your actions (or inaction), if you aren’t going to make a change.. is full of bright moments and intensive workload!
